Vintage Toolbox Herb Garden (Revived & Repurposed!)

Happy Hump Day fellow blogerinas!  Just a few more days until the weekend is here!  For me, that means getting lots of projects done.  Last weekend I finally finished reviving this awesome vintage toolbox that I scored for just a few dollars at an estate sale a few weeks ago.  As soon as I saw it I knew I wanted it to be an herb garden for my porch.  I considered just putting the soil directly in the box, but I like to keep my herbs as long as possible into the winter, so I decided to use pots inside the box that I can bring inside when the temps drop.  (from Ikea, of course!)

To paint the triangles I used the same paint that I did on the front door (see that post here).  I thought it would be a good way to make my porch cohesive.

After I painted the triangles, I coated the bare wood with Thompson's WaterSeal to keep it safe from the elements.  This goes on super easy, but takes about 24 hrs to dry.  Make sure you do this outside because the fumes are killer!

For my labels, I took some little wooden triangles, painted them with chalkboard paint, drilled holes in them and tied them to the toolbox handle with bakers twine.  This way, you can change the labels when needed.

The best part of this?  Using the herbs to make delicious food!  I made a whole wheat margarita pizza with fresh basil and oregano on top. SOOOO yummy!

I love finding little gems like this toolbox and repurposing them into something fabulous!  What kinds of things have you repurposed lately?  We'd love for you to share inspiration with us!

CRAFT: Repurposed Birchbox Boxes

Does anyone else have a habit of hoarding boxes the way I do?  It's so hard to find a good box when you need one, so if a fine specimen of a box happens to cross my path, I don't let that sucker out of my sight.  I've been stashing mine and my husband's empty Birchbox boxes ever since we started getting them last year.  Of course, I had no clue what I was going to use them for, but they were just SUCH GREAT BOXES that I couldn't throw them out.

Unfortunately, the guy boxes are way more awesome than the regular old girl box.  It's like a tiny little drawer.  I saw a few of them stacked in the corner of my studio and knew immediately that I had to make a tiny little chest of drawers out of them.

I don't know about you, but my husband tends to leave tiny things laying all over the house.. change, receipts, ticket stubs, pocket knives, ear buds.. WHATEVER.  So I thought giving him a tiny chest of drawers like this to use will help him keep organized and help me keep my sanity!

I used chalkboard paint for the faces of the drawers so I can re-label them as needed with chalk markers.
As always, a glue gun is key!  I just put a little swirl on each corner to glue the shell of the boxes together.

CRAFT: Whiskey Tasting Set

My husband is always coming up with crazy "crafts" for me to do that are man-friendly.  This particular project was for a whiskey tasting party he was having with  my brothers.  This so-called party involved tasting whiskey, smoking cigars and playing video games.  I watched scary movies alone in bed (my idea of a perfect evening!)

This set was inspired by one we found at Crate and Barrel.  Of course, as soon as I saw it, I said, "I could make something better!"  I bought the glasses at Marshall's for ridiculously cheap.  The tray was found at an estate sale for $1... and painted with chalkboard paint.  The most expensive part of this project (aside from the whiskey) was the chalk markers.  Seriously, though, they're worth every cent!  If you have chalkboard paint anywhere in your home, you MUST get chalk markers!

When labeling your whiskeys make sure to include the location of the distillery.  Apparently, this is an important part of whiskey drinking.  If it's on the bottle, include the years aged, as well.

Check out the photos and get some inspiration for your man and his buds!

CRAFT: "Celebrate the Light" Canvas

Happy Tuesday to you all!  I needed a little extra something as far as Christmas decor is concerned for my dining room... a show stopping attention grabber... and this is what I came up with.  I was inspired while watching Castle... yes, Castle.  Castle said, "On the shortest, darkest days of the year, people of all faiths celebrate the light."  And I realized that really is the reason why Christmas is the best of all holidays... we're celebrating His light.

What you'll need:
A canvas
Chalkboard paint and chalk
Something to poke holes with (a screwdriver, perhaps?)
A strand of Christmas lights
Duct tape
First:  Paint your canvas.. 2 coats should do

Second:  Use your chalk and get creative with your fonts!

Third:  Poke as many holes as there are lights on your strand (mine had 140).  Don't poke the holes too big, though.

Fourth:  Push your lights through from the back.  You may have to push a little hard to get the canvas to tear a bit to fit the lights.  The snugger, the better.  It'll hold the lights in place.

Fifth:  Plug it in!!!

The best part about this project is you can change the text every year... isn't chalkboard paint just the greatest thing EVER?

Merry Christmas to all!

And don't forget to stop by and enter our giveaway here!!!  So much great stuff goes to one blessed winner.  We're so excited to share our creations with you!
